October Update

Greetings!
It's hard to believe it's nearly the end of October already.  In math, we are nearly done with Unit 1 on finding volume of rectangular prisms.  Students have learned that they can calculate volume by either filling a prism with unit cubes and counting them, or using the formulas Base X Height or Length X Width X Height.  This week we'll be taking the unit assessment on this topic.
In writing, we learned the rules of capitalization today.  Ask your child some of the reasons that they should capitalize a letter in their writing.  We learned 10 rules today, and applied the rules in a short story.  We are all working on personal narratives - true stories that have happened to us.
We just wrapped up an adventures block on word study.
Friday is the Halloween parade followed by a party!

Packing up and loading into her car

Jessica from CrossRoads

Bread bread bread!!!

On Monday, a lovely woman from CrossRoads came to pick up the bread from New Franklin School and talked to all the fifth graders about what CrossRoads does and how it helps get people back on their feet. She was very grateful for all the bread donations!!! She says they will be serving this alongside some homemade soups this week. Thank you, thank you, to all of you who were able to spend time baking this weekend!! We had over 40 loaves donated! The students felt very proud to be a part of something so good and they learned a thing or two in the process.

Mia's letter

Dear Nanny,
Today we watched Amy Driscoll, a King Arthur Flour baker, make bread.  She showed us the yeast, flour, and other things, too.  She showed us different techniques, like how to braid the bread, and also showed us different things we could do.  She taught us how to fold, cut, and prepare dinner rolls, pizza, cinnamon buns, garlic knots, and pretzels.  I rrreeeeeeeaaaallllyyyy want to make pretzels!  Also, cinnamon buns!  Also, everything!  I could be a chef!  The only downside of this is that it takes 3 1/2 hours to do... Anyway, other than that, I look forward to baking in our kitchen.

Your favorite grandchild,
Mia Rose

Cam's letter

Dear Mom and Dad,
Today I learned so much about baking!  Amy Driscoll taught us a lot about how to make loaves of bread, how to braid bread, pretzels, cinnamon buns, and how to throw a pizza!  That was by far my favorite.  It was even cooler to be a helper for Amy Driscoll.  We first added warm water, sugar and yeast.  Then we added whole wheat flour. She taught us how to measure flour the correct way.  Then oil and salt.  Then we added 1 more cup of whole wheat flour.  The next step was to add the all-purpose flour.  We left 1 cup of that flour out, to work with later.  We learned how to knead the bread.  We used the flour left over so it wouldn't stick.  Instead of waiting an hour and a half, there was already a made dough to make into different things.  This day was by far a great experience and I can't wait to go home and make more!
Sincerely,
Cam

Tissues and Clorox

It's that time of the year again! We seem to be running out of Clorox wipes and tissues. If you happen to be heading to the store anytime soon, we'd love a donation.
Thanks,
Your Friendly Germ-Busters

Delivering their lines

The Skit

Cam's intro speech

Problem Solvers and More!

I just wanted to write a quick note to say how proud I am of your kids tonight!  About two weeks ago, the Climate Team was looking for a class to do a presentation in front of the school on something that we are learning about in Open Circle.  I volunteered our class since they're so fabulous.
The students were split into groups of three or four and had to design a skit that showed all the steps to Problem Solving (STOP, THINK, GO).  They wrote and acted out their own short skits.  Yesterday, we practiced them in the gym for the first time and the students voted for their favorite performance, based on how well it taught the lesson, how loud they were, and how they did at facing the audience.  The vote was close, but one emerged a winner.
Today, we had just enough time for that group to practice it once or twice, one student prepared a speech to explain what the audience would see, and the rest learned a line to recite with feeling.  The assembly was today and they did a marvelous job!  I'll post some pictures so you can see.

Today we also studied more about the American Revolution (ask your child about the protesting that colonists did and the taxes and acts we were upset about), worked on expanded form with decimals, and did a fun activity, where students wrote short scripts for their "robots" using as many adverbs as possible, and their "robot" acted them out.
